If you wish to dress as one of the children from the school, you should wear a colored buttoned down shirt with a tie under the cloak, combined with black pants. The color of course will depend on your house, Gryffindor will be scarlet and gold, Slytherin should be green and silver, Hufflepuff yellow and black and Ravenclaw blue and bronze. Remember also that each Hogwarts house has a scarf in its very own colors. If you want to dress up as the boy himself, Harry Potter, you must not forget your lightning bolt shaped scar on the side of your forehead or your round framed glasses (the rounder the frames are, the better). Not forgetting of course the all important wand, either a gnarled or straight one.

An ideal accompaniment to children dressing as Hogwarts school children is for their parents to dress as witch or wizard professors, especially at Halloween. Though I prefer to dress as something a little more scary like a Dementor, this does not really scare my children as they just laugh at me. But just wait, one year I will scare them. I think I might try being a Death Eater this year.

Some people say that the true costume is in the accessories that are used, I think that they are right, the right accessories give the authentic touch. There is a huge selection of accessories available for the true Potter fanatics to give your character more authenticity, such as wands, scarfs, hats, Potter glasses, school ties, Harry Potter scar and makeup kits, wigs and beards, Quidditch kits, and flying brooms and much more.

When you are looking to buy a Harry Potter costume or one of the many Potter characters costumes, it will pay you to obtain a good quality made one. It will last longer and survive the children’s rough-and-tumble play. Buying a low priced and low quality fancy dress costume is a false economy. I certainly wouldn’t want to risk my children’s disappointment due to to an outfit that didn’t survive even the early stages of a Halloween or any other costume party festivities.
